Sunday Sketchbook (And Progress!)

Remember when I painted a skateboard for SkaterAid 2013? That was pretty sweet! Just the other day, I recieved a call for art for this year's SkaterAid (it's going to be the last one too) and I knew I had to participate again. So I dug up an old skateboard from my basement and started working on an idea.

I usually spend a day or so just...thinking. What do I want to paint? What will I paint? What haven't I painted yet? And I go though my usual themes: girl's face, birds, hearts, skulls, etc... And I came up with a fox. I haven't painted a fox in awhile, let's go with that.

Sketching! And a possible title? I'm not sure yet.

I don't have any concrete plans for this and I'm doing my usual winging it. So we'll see how this goes! I'll take plenty of photos along the way!

On My Desk Wednesday

Well, this was several Wednesdays ago...seems as though I've hit a bit of a summer slump.

It always starts out as a sketch in red pencil.

First a wash of a light tan color. Then outline with a new Sharpie.

Adding shadows and the main colors.

More and more...

Then stamp my name!

Skateboarding!

This week's goal is to finish drawing on this skateboard. If it all goes to plan, I will be donating it to a fundraiser in Atlanta. Just gotta get it done first!

The original plan was to just paint it with acrylic paint but I changed my mind and used colored pencil instead. I'm enjoying the texture this is creating. 

It needs to be done in the next day or so. Wish me luck!

Work Work Work!

Our Sunday was full of little projects, from cleaning up the house to school homework. Maz and I spent some time together at the kitchen table working on things that are due this week.

Current Projects, Progress Report

This morning I hung out with my handyman Dad. Thank goodness he could figure out the "plans" I had drawn up without much trouble and he cut out a large shape from plywood. I tell him all the time we should start a business together where he builds stuff and I paint it. It could work, if we lived closer together.

Get Your Paint On, Week Two Progress

For week two of Get Your Paint On, I'm allowing myself to paint freely and without a specific plan. I started with a canvas that was mess from an unfinished project and painted thin layers of ivory over it. The Basquiat crowns were applied with a thick layer of Crimson acrylic and Soft Gel Medium. I'm waiting on the crowns to dry before adding a final touch. If this painting turns out half as good as the image in my head, I'll be happy.

Monday Art Makin'

It's a rainy Monday. It was nearly impossible to get down to the studio today but I forced myself to quit being lazy and just paint. I'm feeling like a cold is slowly making its way to my sinuses, so I better get some work done before the sickness takes over. While I was painting, I thought to myself, man, it feels good to paint! A few weeks have passed since I painted anything, and I know I've been missing it.

I wanted to show off some details of my studio. Since signing up for Get Your Paint On I've been going through my supplies and thinking about what I need. Well, looks like I don't NEED anything! In this picture you can see three small blank canvases to the right, and below the table is another stack of canvases in various sizes. I've got plenty of paint and other mediums to work with. 

And here's one shelf of my supply closet. Yes, my supply closet! I'm so lucky to have this space and it is kind of overwhelming to see all the art stuff I've accumulated over the years. Could I be an art supply hoarder? I even ordered some supplies from Dick Blick this morning! Ok, for the month of February I vow to NOT buy any art supplies or books (I've bought over 10 books in the past month), and just use what I have!

The Get Your Paint On ecourse started today and I'm looking forward to having artistic assignments! I've picked out an empty canvas from my collection and I can't wait to start painting. Whoo!

More Progress - NaBloPoMo Day Six

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Labor Day weekend! I had nice, easy weekend with family and it'll be hard to go back to normal tomorrow morning. I'm up late this evening, painting, and watching more Season 2 of Arrested Development.

Slowly but surely, it's coming along. Maz was drawing alongside of me. A great way to spend an afternoon.

On My Desk Wednesday

My last roadtrip was at the beginning of this year. I drove up to Huntsville, Alabama to hang out with my BFF, Amber and attend a wedding of an old friend. I remember telling Amber that I get really excited about driving long distances because then I get a chance to think, make plans, figure stuff out and all that. The reality is: I don't think of anything but the road.
But I did have an idea for a painting. An Alabama Pride tattoo design! It's taken a few weeks to actually sit down, draw it up, and figure out composition, etc. etc. but the end to this painting is near! I can feel it!
This is one of the bigger watercolor paintings I've done in a long while. The flower pedals are rather tedious but there's sort of a zen feeling that comes over me when I'm painting.

Tomorrow I start working on a large project for the local dance teacher. She's getting ready for her yearly May dance recital and I get to make a huge Las Vegas sign for her. I'll be sure to take pictures!

My Plate! It is Full!

I've had two weeks off of school and by the looks of this blog, it seems I've also taken two weeks off from it. I decided I should take advantage of this extra free time and do as little as possible. I've caught up on my ongoing to-do list, as well as my sleep, and spent as much time as possible with family.

Spring is here in the south, although some people might disagree. Since today is supposed to be close to 90 degrees, Georgia might have skipped a season and started up summer. I'm extremely excited about the warmer weather. This past winter was extra rainy and dreary. I didn't feel like I was very productive or creative from November through February. But the sun is out and my ideas are blooming! I almost can't keep track of everything.

I've been working on more watercolor paintings, mostly traditional tattoo-influenced. I think it'd be awesome to be a custom tattoo artist eventually, but for now I'll just practice on paper.

I've been working on script (swirly lines, I call 'em!), the praying hands image, and Pink Floyd flash. I would love to publish a book my own personal flash in the future!

Since I've been working on bold lines and bold colors, I decided that I need to switch it up and work in just black and grey with no outlines at all. This is just black gouache on 300 lb. watercolor paper. I'm not quite finished with it yet, but should be done by the weekend. I need to make color copies of my recent work and add them to my art portfolio at the tattoo shop.

And finally! Something on canvas! The last time I went to a Micheals there was a crazy-good sale on large canvases, so I bought a couple. Here's a large peacock I've been working on. I wanted something simple, with bold, thick lines and bright colors. So, of course, a peacock! I keep fixing small things here and there, so it's becoming tedious. I hope to finish it soon and put a nice gloss coat over everything. It should look awesome!

In addition to all this art, I'm also working on curating a feline photo show at a nearby bookstore (scheduled for November 2010), organizing an art fundraiser for July 2010, working at the arts council and the tattoo shop, taking care of the family and the dog, planning a three day vacation (very much needed!), and part time at the technical school (new class started today). So, I'm busy but I love it. I wouldn't have it any other way.
