Leviathan - Full & Detail

Folk art has been a huge influence recently. This idea of a tree inside a whale came to me out of the blue, and I tried to research where this may have originated but only came across stories of a man inside of a whale. So I primed a small sheet of plywood and doodled away. This is the result:

I used acrylic paint, an oil paint stick, and paint markers to create all the detail. 

This piece is created by gluing two pieces of plywood together. The whale is one piece and the water is another.

"Leviathan and the Tree of Life" is about 36 inches long and 18 inches tall.

Celestial Folk Art Series - Ursa Major (Great Bear)

Lately my art has been inspired by folk art and space (see The Sun and The Moon), and my third painting of 2014 added to the celestial series. I painted my version of one of my favorite constellations: Ursa Major, or the "Great Bear".

I used a large canvas that had been sitting in my studio for a little over a year. Sometimes oversized canvases just stay blank, looming over your head, saying "paint me paint me..." And you're too scared that you spent all this money on canvas, just to mess it up. 

Thankfully, I didn't mess this one up.

After posting it on Instagram, a friend asked about it. He stopped by the studio and took it home with him! This is the first time I've ever painted something for myself, then have it sell within a month of completion. Wow!

Full Moon Fever

Of course, after painting The Sun, I had to paint a moon!

Making Art - New Stuff

After my visit to Pasaquan in November, I found myself obsessed with visionary and folk art. Then I felt inspired to create some folk art work of my own. I bought some plywood, cut some circles with my scroll saw, and painted like a mad woman. Here's the result:

This sun measures at least 2 feet wide. Three pieces of thin plywood make up the face and the rings. I'm quite happy with her; she's a delight!

Travel: Pasaquan

After reading about Pasaquan on the Roadside America website and in the Weird Georgia book, I knew I had to make the short trek to visit this visionary artist's home. Since my Sunday plans were canceled, I had the free time to attend Artists for Pasaquan, a small artists festival marking the end of the visiting season.

Located near Buena Vista, Georgia, USA, Pasaquan is a world-renowned visionary art site that was created by the late Eddie Owens Martin, between the mid-1950s and his death in 1986.

Even though the paint was peeling in most places, the colors were still vibrant. 

St. EOM's mandalas covered many walls throughout the building.

Mazzy really enjoyed checking out the area and talking to other artists about making art. She's now thinking about how I'm going to buy a van so we can paint it up and drive it around. My little artist!

I even bought some art! Once I saw this Great Horned Owl by Peter Loose, I just had to have it. And then my pal Sam G surprised me with his Luv Folk piece. They'll look lovely in my art collection.
